G. BRIDGE, W. BRANCH LOCK UP CO-CHAMPIONSHIP IN GOLF

Great Bridge and Western Branch virtually locked up a co-championship in Southeastern District golf Tuesday with victories at Sleepy Hole.

Great Bridge defeated Churchland, 325-335, and Western Branch topped Deep Creek, 347-359. All four teams carried 4-1 records into the matches.

The defending champion Wildcats can wrap up the top seed in the Southeastern going into the Eastern Region playoffs with a victory over winless Norcom in the season finale Thursday at Seven Springs.

According to Southeastern rules, when two teams tie for the title the head-to-head winner gets the region bid. Great Bridge defeated Western Branch on Sept. 19.

Matt Perron shot a 5-over-par 77 to pace Great Bridge. Western Branch was led by its No. 5 player, Ryder Randolph, who posted a 78.

In another match:

Gary Crutcher fired a 5-under-par 67 as Granby totaled a 4-over 284 to beat Menchville, Maury, Lake Taylor and Booker T. Washington at Red Wing.

In girls basketball:

Lakeland 100, Smithfield 30: Rebecca Demiel scored 24 points and Patricia Ward had 15 of her 22 points in the first quarter.

Nansemond-Suffolk 53, Norfolk Collegiate 44: Jill VanGuilder, Ann Murden and Allison Dunn had 11 points each and Lea Wilson added 10 for the Saints. Elizabeth Swearingen scored 15 and Melanie Sandford added 10 for the Oaks.

Atlantic Shores 60, B.E.A.C.H. 8: Shelley Matthews scored 11 of her 19 points in a 20-0 fourth-quarter run and Tamika Brown finished with 12 points and 12 steals. The Breakers lost Sarah Hoffman to injury and four players to fouls and had only three on the court for the final 2:30.

Nansemond River 61, Franklin 29: Bunny Williams had 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals and Jannie Porter added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors. Mandi Vick led the Broncos with 16 points.

Norfolk Academy 63, Catholic 34: The Bulldogs built a 16-4 cushion behind Kate Rowen's six first-quarter points. Rowen finished with 16 points and Kendra Robins added 15. Samantha Green scored 10 points for the Crusaders.

Greenbrier 64, Cape Henry 54: Mandy Havens led with 27 points and Karen Carmichael scored 10 of her 12 points in the third quarter for the Gators.

Isle of Wight 52, Huguenot Academy 36: Karyn Miller had eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter and Casey Delano had 12 points and six rebounds for the Chargers.

In field hockey:

Cape Henry 1, Lake Taylor 0: Kelly Bradley scored in the second half for the Dolphins.

Norfolk Academy 3, St. Gertrude 0: Kate Rueger had two assists as the the Bulldogs outshot St. Gertrude, 34-0.

In girls tennis:

Great Bridge 9, Churchland 0: The Wildcats won their 28th consecutive Southeastern District match.

In boys soccer:

Portsmouth Christian 4, St. Vincent's 3: Gary Paul, Andy Ballard, Brian McCauley and Jon Collins scored a goal each and Jeremy Bond had two assists as the Patriots built a 4-1 lead.

In girls volleyball:

Western Branch 2, Churchland 0: Katie MacPhail was 6 for 6 serving with four kills and three aces for the Bruins.
