50,000 EXPECTED TO WATCH PEANUT FEST PARADE SATURDAY

The kickoff parade is as much a part of Peanut Fest as the Oct. 5-8 exhibits, food, entertainment and rides - but it comes a week earlier.

Saturday is the day, 10 a.m. the starting time for the 18th annual Peanut Fest parade.

Parade participants are asked to arrive at 7:30 a.m. to line up for the 1.5 mile march that begins on the corner of Broad and West Washington streets.

Then the paraders go up West Washington, taking a left turn onto Main Street and ending on Finney Street.

The judges, on benches in front of Crestar Bank, will decide on the best float, best entry and most creative offering.

The Peanut Fest Parade is always a big affair, and this year is no exception.

There are 204 entries, including, once again, the Shriners - this time with 36 units.

And, of course, there will be music - by bands from Lakeland, Nansemond River, NansemondSuffolk Academy, Windsor and Smithfield.

There will be cars and trucks, clowns and horses, a few surprises.

Security is provided by the Suffolk Police Department. Volunteers working with parade participants represent Virginia Power Company.

Peanut Fest Parade officials expect an audience of more than 50,000. by CNB
