WILLIAM H. HOLLOWELL JR.

William Herbert Hollowell Jr., died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 1995, at the Skilled Nursing Facility of the Chowan Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was 74 years of age and the son of the late Mattie Byrum and William Herbert Hollowell Sr.

Mr. Hollowell is survived by his wife, Frances Tunstall Hollowell formerly of South Boston, Va.; two daughters, Martha Hollowell of Snow Hill, N.C., and Fran Reynolds of Atlanta, Ga.

After attending East Carolina University for one year majoring in history, Mr. Hollowell attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for four years where he received his B.S. in pharmacy. Ten days later, he passed his State Board and became a registered pharmacist in 1944. During his professional career, Mr. Hollowell had served as president of the Northeastern Drug Society as well as serving on various District and State Committees.

His employment began during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946 where he served as the director of the Pharmacy at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, a 2000 bed facility. From 1946 until 1957, Mr. Hollowell practiced pharmacy at the Leggett & Davis Drug Store in Edenton. In 1957, Mr. Hollowell purchased the drug store and changed the name to Hollowell Drug Store. From 1989 until present, he had been semi-retired and served as a relief druggist.

Among the service to his community, Mr. Hollowell was faithful to his church. He attended the Edenton United Methodist Church where he has served as treasurer since 1971; past chairman of the Board of Trustees; past Sunday School teacher; past chairman of Official Board; past chairman of the Church Social Services; and received the Layman of the Year award in 1984. Mr. Hollowell served on the Morehead Award Committee for Chowan and Gates County from 1952 until 1962 and became chairman of the committee in 1962 and served in that capacity until 1988.

The American Lung Association was another service to his community that Mr. Hollowell shared. He was past president of the American Lung Association of North Carolina and past president of the American Lung Association of Eastern North Carolina. In 1979, Mr. Hollowell received the Volunteer of the Year Award for Eastern North Carolina.

Mr. Hollowell's political career began in 1968 where he served on the Edenton Town Council until 1988. From 1984 until 1988, at the request of the Mayor, Mr. Hollowell served on all committees as member and advisor. He had served as chairman of the Finance Committee for approximately 12 years, past chairman of the Recreation Deptartment, past member of League of Municipalities Board of Directors, past member of NCLM Legislative Committee, member of the Chowan County Industrial Revenue and Pollution Authority, past chairman of Chowan County Board of Social Services and past member of the Board of Directors of Albemarle Development Authority.

Mr. Hollowell assisted in political campaigns as co-chairman, Skipper Bowles for Governor, Chowan County; chairman, Bob Jordan for Governor, Chowan County; chairman, Bob Jordan for Lt. Governor, Chowan County; and co-chairman, Jim Hunt for Governor, Chowan County.

Helping the blind through Lionism was a major interest for Mr. Hollowell all of his life. He was past president of N.C. Lions Association for the blind; served on International President's Committee in 1989; past district governor; past deputy district governor; past zone chairman; past president Edenton Lion Club; served on several state, district and local committees. He recently completed a term of three years as chairman of the Long Range Plan for North Carolina Lions. In 1983, Mr. Hollowell received the International President's Award (Lion's second highest award); received the International Leadership Award in 1990; the Lions Melvin Jones Fellow in 1991; and the Edenton Lion of the Year Award in 1987.

Mr. Hollowell was a member of the North Carolina Commission for the Blind since 1978. He was elected as vice-chairman by the Commission in 1990 and served on various other committees. In June of 1995, Mr. Hollowell was reappointed chairman of the Commission by Governor Jim Hunt.

A memorial service for Mr. Hollowell will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at the Edenton United Methodist Church by Dr. Stan Smith and the Rev. Ralph Epps. In lieu of flowers, memorial contriubtions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Edenton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Edenton, N.C. 27932, or to one's favorite charity.

Honorary pallbearers are area pharmacists, members of the Men's Bible Class of the Methodist Church, members of the Edenton Lions Club, Lions in 31J District, members of the State Foundation, Services for the Blind, and members of the Coast Guard Auxillary. The Evans Funeral Home of Edenton is serving the Hollowell Family.
