FISHING GENERALLY IS GOOD, BUT SPOTS FALL A TAD

Fishing was good on ocean piers along the Dare coast Wednesday, although spot fishing wasn't as spectacular as it had been for the past several days.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed a few black drum, speckled trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel and tailor bluefish.

Speckled trout weighing as much as 5 1/2 pounds were taken, along with tailor bluefish, on Avalon Pier during the morning. Good numbers of Spanish mackerel were caught from the end of the pier during the afternoon.

Tailor blues and nice croaker were landed early in the day from Nags Head Pier. A few Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken throughout the afternoon.

Jennette's Pier reported a handful of spot, trout and bluefish decked.

Spot fishing was great for several hours on Outer Banks Pier during the morning. Some black drum, small puppy drum, Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed later in the day.

A few puppy drum, bluefish and pompano were caught by fishermen on Rodanthe Pier. Two- to three-pound bluefish were taken on Avon Pier by anglers using cut bait.

Speckled trout, small pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel were landed from Frisco Pier Wednesday morning. Spot fishing was good throughout the afternoon.

Spot, sea mullet and small black drum were beached by surfcasters from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. A few speckled trout also were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Puppy drum, spot, medium-sized bluefish and big jack cravalle were take by anglers fishing from Cape Point. The jacks were feeding on spot, quite a few of which were beached by the aggressive jacks.

Nice pompano and small bluefish were taken in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling was fairly slow around Oregon Inlet. Headboat fishing in Croatan Sound was slow, with only a few croaker taken.

Good catches of small king mackerel were reported a little farther off the beach in deeper water.

Fair numbers of dolphin, a few tuna and scattered wahoo were taken by Gulf Stream charters off Oregon Inlet. The best action was north of ``the point.''

Billfishing was excellent off Hatteras. Releases included a blue marlin and a sailfish by the Wahoo, a blue marlin and a sailfish by the Big Eye, a white marlin and a sailfish by the Citation and two sailfish each by the Hatteras Fever, Judy Ann and the Release. Dolphin and wahoo fishing also were good.

Surfcasters should find fair numbers of speckled trout available in deeper sloughs along the beach, providing inshore water remains clear.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 73 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
