Law enforcement officials from the United States and abroad today begin a four-day conference on how communities respond to crime and how those responses might be improved.
It's the 24th annual training conference of the International Association of Police Community Relations Officers, at the Holiday Inn-Portsmouth Waterfront. Registration is today. Workshops begin Friday and continue through Sunday.
``The conference is a way to share ideas and try to come up with some solutions for crime problems,'' said Leon Whitehurst, a detective with the Portsmouth Police Department.
Whitehurst, a vice president of the association, said workshop topics include community policing, black-on-black crime, gang violence and firearms education.
Speakers include James A. Andrews, Chesterfield County Police Department; Judge Alotha Willis, Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court; FBI Special Agent James F. Talley Jr.; and Col. Marty M. Tapscott, former chief of police in Richmond.
