Four South Hampton Roads high school athletes are among 20 seniors vying for Virginia's Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
Norview's Tami Langston, Lakeland's James Temple, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's Heather Rountree and Ocean Lakes' Jack Wheeler are up for the award, which recognizes students for a commitment to academic achievement, community service and athletic accomplishments.
State award recipients move on to a national selection process. The male and female national award winners will be honored during the national-TV Heisman Trophy award presentation in December.
Wheeler plays volleyball, basketball and baseball at Ocean Lakes and also is a member of several clubs, including the Future Business Leaders of America and the Latin Honor Society.
Temple is the defending Bay Rivers District and Region I heavyweight wrestling champion and a second-team all-district offensive guard. He also competes on the Lakeland track team, carries just short of a 4.0 GPA and is involved in church and volunteer work.
Rountree is currently playing field hockey and cross country, and will run track in the spring. She carries an A average and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Langston competes on the Norview tennis, swimming and softball teams, has a 3.6 GPA and also does extensive volunteer work.
