Another bridge spanning the entrance to the Elizabeth River?
Recently a consultant to the Virginia Department of Transportation unveiled several possibilities for another link between the Peninsula and South Hampton Roads. The most intriguing has already been quietly discussed for some time: a bridge (or bridge-tunnel) between the Craney Island area of Portsmouth and the area north of Terminal Boulevard in Norfolk.
Heads up, commuters! This could be the answer to many of your driving problems, especially to those individuals working at the Norfolk Naval Base who come in daily from Chesapeake or beyond. In addition to rerouting vacationers off the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, this connection would provide a straight shot to work. And our neighborhoods in Norfolk suffering from road congestion would be relieved of many traffic problems.
I hope the city councils of our area will endorse this specific crossing and push for an expedited building schedule.
