A Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel police officer died Friday after apparently shooting himself in the head while on duty near the restaurant on the South Island.
George U. Beaumont, 65, died at about 1:40 p.m. at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Beaumont was found slumped in the driver's seat of his patrol car parked on the east side of the South Island by an emergency crewman at about 12 p.m. He was flown to Norfolk by air ambulance.
Beaumont, who was scheduled to retire in December after 25 years on the bridge-tunnel force, was reportedly depressed over family and health problems.
