Health Department officials reported Friday that they have confirmed the 10th case of rabies this year in Virginia Beach.
This latest incident involved a pet dog fighting with a rabid raccoon on Misty Place in the Little Neck area. This is the first time rabies has been reported in the densely populated neighborhood, which is surrounded by heavily wooded lots.
The dog was protected with a current rabies vaccination and will be confined for 90 days for observation.
The case was identified in the same week that Gov. George Allen declared Oct. 1 to 7 as Rabies Awareness Week. As part of that, many Hampton Roads veterinarians are providing reduced cost rabies shots for $6 in their offices.
Pet owners should contact their local veterinarians for more information and should report all animal bites to their local Animal Control offices.
