FINAL-MINUTE SCORE LIFTS SOUTHAMPTON, 20-14

Fullback William Brown pounded the ball in from 1 yard out for the winning touchdown with a little over a minute to play as the Southampton Indians posted a 20-14 victory over Lakeland in the Bay Rivers opener for both teams Friday night.

The drive was aided by a gutsy 22-run by Indians tailback Rico Ivey, who finished with 137 yards rushing.

The Indians (4-0) started the drive on their own 43-yard line after stopping Cavaliers tailback Travis Rawls on fourth-and-three.

After gains of 11 and 22 yards by Ivey, sandwiched around a delay of game penalty, the Indians took advantage of an illegal participation penalty on Lakeland (1-3), giving the Indians the ball at the Cavaliers' 13-yard line.

A 9-yard run by quarterback Brad Davis set up Brown's winner.

``Both teams played a heckuva ballgame,'' Indians head coach Littleton Parker said. ``We were unable to put the ball in a couple of times deep in their territory. We are just glad to get the victory.''

Parker was referring to the fact that his team turned the ball over on downs several times in Cavaliers territory.

Southampton opened the scoring in the first quarter on its first drive on a two-yard scamper by Brown. The Indians struck again when Davis hit Durane Parker on a 43-yard touchdown pass.

The Cavaliers would get on the board with about three minutes to play on Antoine Riddick's five-yard run to make it 14-6 at the half.

After no scoring in the third the Cavaliers tied the game on quarterback Lindell Hunter's 59-yard touchdown pass to Riddick. Rawls then converted on the two-point conversion. Nansemond River 23 Franklin 8

Rodgers added a three-yard scoring run in the second quarter. Nansemond River (2-2) also got a one-yard TD plunge from Reginald Wiggins and a 35-yard Drey Asbell field goal.
