Portsmouth's United Way campaign was at 42 percent of goal Thursday, when campaign workers gathered at the Children's Museum of Virginia for a report meeting.
The goal for this year is $645,916. A total of $268,850 was reported Thursday.
The early leader was the Major Firms division, which reached 67 percent of its $258,000 goal. Jeri Smith of Commonwealth Gas is the chairman of that group.
Smith also was given special recognition for helping push the gas company almost $5,000 over its goal of $14,770 by raffling off three days of her annual leave as incentives for giving.
Others who passed 50 percent were Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority, chaired by Wendy Hunter, at 58 percent of a goal of $11,951, and the Manufacturing/Wholesale/Auto division, chaired by Sandie Bittner and Gene Hassell, at 56 percent of a goal of $36,316.
Other divisions reported as follows:
Residential/Retirees, 45 percent of goal of $42,101;
Professionals, 38 percent of goal of $93,199;
Builders/Developers/Real Estate, 16 percent of goal of $10,077;
City Employees, 11 percent of goal of $96,000;
Retail Sales/Insurance, 10 percent of goal of $37,272;
Public Schools, no report on goal of $61,000.
The Keel Club reported pledges of $104,349, about 8 percent over goal, and the Pacesetters were close to meeting a goal of $198,402. Herb Haneman of Western Branch Diesel and Alan E. Golihue of Portsmouth General Foundation chaired the Keel Club and Manny Munoz of WAVY-TV chaired the Pacesetters.
The second report meeting is scheduled for Nov. 9. Marilee Hawkins, director of the city's Environmental Services, heads the Portsmouth campaign this year. by CNB
