Virginia Beach police march on the Oceanfront Saturday to bring
attention to public safety issues in the city. Police want more
officers on the street, 24-hour patrol cars for neighborhoods and
more competitive salaries for officers. Virginia Beach has about 1.5
police officers for every 1,000 citizens, the lowest ratio in
Hampton Roads, according to the Weldon-Cooper Center for Public
Service at the University of Virginia. Norfolk has the highest ratio
with 2.8 officers for every 1,000 citizens.
