IVY LEAGUE GROWING ON FORMER COX FIELD HOCKEY STANDOUT HALE

There are certain things about being a freshman athlete that can be intimidating.

For Princeton field hockey player Kirsty Hale, there were thoughts of possibly being overwhelmed by upperclassmen and even having to sit the bench.

Well, Hale has done well to put those fears aside. Not only is the former Cox High School standout a starter, but she was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week last week when she knocked in two goals and assisted on two others in a 6-2 triumph over Cornell.

Heading into Saturday's match with Brown, Hale leads the the team in scoring with four goals and six assists for 14 points.

``I got the impression that sometimes you can have a really good week and not get it (Rookie of the Week),'' Hale said. ``Or you can have a decent week and get it. It felt good though.''

Hale is learning to manage her time in her new surroundings. She has found that in college it is tough managing a schedule that includes classes, studying, practicing, eating and sleeping.

``I think I am handling it okay so far,'' Hale said. ``Playing a sport takes up a lot of time because sometimes we might watch a couple hours of films along with practice.''

The main thing that drew Hale to Princeton is head coach Beth Bozman. She had a lot of the same characteristics that Nancy Fowlkes, her coach at Cox, had.

``She (Bozman) is a perfectionist just like Fowlkes.'' said Hale. ``She expects the best from you.''

Although Hale now starts, she hasn't lost that pregame anxiety.

``A lot of us are nervous before a game,'' Hale said. ``You can't really prepare for it until you actually go through it. I still get that tingle when I hear the anthem being played.''
