CAREER TRACK

ACCOUNTING

Cynthia M. DuVal was promoted to senior accountant at Witt, Mares & Company in Newport News. She has been with the accounting firm since January, 1993.

William D. Conner has joined Edmondson, LedBetter & Ballard in Norfolk as audit supervisor. Prior to joining the accounting firm, he performed internal audit duties for Cenit Bank in Norfolk for 5 1/2 years, attaining the position of manager of internal audit and security functions.

ENGINEERING

Sandra Y. Brinson has joined Langley & McDonald, an engineering firm in Virginia Beach, as an environmental specialist. For the last six years she has worked as a staff scientist and ecologist for local engineering firms.

BANKING

Judy M. Barrett was promoted to vice president of Central Fidelity Bank. Barrett currently serves as branch manager of the World Trade office in Norfolk and prior to that served as branch manager of the Kempsville office in Virginia Beach. She joined the bank in August 1978.

Pamela S. Owens was named vice president with Essex Savings Bank. Owens manages the human resources department for Essex Companies. She had previously managed the Southeast division of human resources at Heinz Inc./Weight Watchers International in Virginia Beach.

EDUCATION

Skip Ailstock was named resources manager at Johnson & Wales University in Norfolk. He will oversee purchasing and facilities at the culinary arts college. Prior to this, Ailstock served as a food and beverage controller at Johnson & Wales' Providence, R.I., campus.

HEALTH CARE

Dr. Andrea J. Grams has joined the Norfolk optometric practice of Dr. Joel N. Zaba. Grams recently received her optometric degree from Southern College of Optometry after completing an optometric externship at Kenner Army Hospital in Fort Lee. Prior to becoming an optometrist, she was a registered nurse at the intensive care unit of the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Milwaukee.

LAW

J. Jeffrey Tinkham was named a member of the Chesapeake law firm of Faggert & Frieden. He will practice in the areas of business, banking and commercial real estate development and finance. He was formerly associated with Croshaw, Beale, Hauser & Lewis, a law firm in Virginia Beach.

Also, Deborah C. Waters has joined Faggert & Frieden as an associate attorney. She will engage in the general practice of law with emphasis on commercial and personal injury litigation. Waters was formerly associated with Croshaw, Beale, Hauser & Lewis.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Virginia Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America elected Joseph J. Thomas, director of recycling for the Southeastern Public Service Authority, as its new president. He will serve a two year term.

REAL ESTATE

Virginia Commercial Real Estate Services in Virginia Beach promoted Patrick L. Mumey as president and R.L. (Abe) Ellis to senior vice president. Both were former associates of the company.

TRANSPORTATION

Norfolk Southern promoted five officers in its company. D. Henry Watts, who was executive vice president of marketing, became vice chairman of the corporation. He began his career with the company in 1950. He also held the positions of vice president of personnel and executive vice president of corporate planning before moving to marketing.

L.I. (Ike) Prillaman replaced Watts as executive vice president of marketing. He joined Norfolk Southern in 1970 as manager of internal audit. He most recently worked as vice president of properties.

William B. Bales was elected senior vice president of international marketing at the company. Bales joined the corporation in 1962. He was most recently vice president of coal marketing.

Also, J.W. (Bill) Fox Jr. and Thomas J. Golian were elected vice presidents. Fox will serve as vice president of coal marketing. Golian was an executive assistant to the chairman, president and chief executive officer.
