WINDY WEATHER DOESN'T PREVENT SOME UNUSUAL WAYS OF LANDING FISH

While windy weather kept many anglers off the water during the past week, a few took advantage of the situation to try something new.

Among them were Jim Wright of Virginia Beach and Bill Hill of Cherrystone.

Wright boated a 9-pound, 14-ounce flounder from a small boat just off the dock at Lynnhaven Waterways Marina in Virginia Beach. It's second only to an 11-12 flatfish boated earlier this year by Scott Cole of Virginia Beach.

Hill, who divides his time between Cherrystone Campground and Oak Hall on the Eastern Shore, beached a 6-pound, 5-ounce speckled trout while fishing from a shoreline at Schooner Bay, near Onancock.

Perhaps the week's most outstanding catch, however, was a 40-pound king mackerel boated near a wreck off Virginia Beach Tuesday by Carl H. Hunter of Chesapeake. He was aboard the Carrie Lynn. It's the second largest king in the state this season.

Topping recent catches on the freshwater scene was an 8-pound, 8-ounce largemouth bass boated at Lake Whitehurst in Norfolk by Larry Ison of Virginia Beach.
