As a first-time participant in the recent United Way Day of Caring, I want to say what a meaningful experience it was. I was warmly greeted at the door of the Miller Day Nursery in Portsmouth by its director, Wanda Young.
Our small group of volunteers from Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters spent the day doing much-needed painting and yard work. My thoughts were on Wanda and the challenges of this small, yet important United Way agency. Her spirit and enthusiasm were impressive and infectious. Her staff and dozens of young children are lucky she is their leader and role model.
At the end of the day, I felt truly heart-warmed. I applaud the United Way for coordinating the Day of Caring and all the folks at the Miller Day Nursery for making us feel so special. I am also grateful that my employer, Children's Hospital, recognizes the importance of this event.
