James E. Bateman Sr., 79, of the 9500 block of Granby St., died Sept. 29, 1995, in Norfolk.
He was a retired electricians helper for Norfolk & Western Railroad where he worked for 22 years and 10 months. Mr. Bateman was a native of East Lake, N.C., and was the widower of Anna M. Bateman. He was a member of Knights of Pythias Charity Lodge (NU)10.
He is survived by three daughters, Frances Allen of Apple Valley, Calif., Roseanna Thomas of Perris, Calif., and Nettie Prater of Virginia Beach; three sons, James E. Bateman Jr. of Norfolk, Milton M. Bateman of Anaheim, Calif., and Richard E. Bateman of Norfolk; one brother, Raymond Bateman of Norfolk; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, William Ray Bateman.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. Burial is in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at other times at 6639 Hudson Ave., Norfolk. Following the funeral, the family will receive friends at 5341 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, Knights of Pythias Charity Lodge (NU)10.
