Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. will join Transportation Secretary Garland Garrett, Senate leader Marc Basnight and other dignitaries to officially open the Tyrrel County Rest Area and Visitor's Center in Columbia on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
``This new facility will be a terrific regional resource,'' Hunt said. ``It will not only have a positive impact on Tyrrell County and the Albemarle area, but will play a vital role in our efforts to showcase all of North Carolina.''
The North Carolina Department of Transportation funded the Rest Area and Visitor's Center located along the banks of the Scuppernong River.
The Visitor's Center will be staffed by the Partnership for the Sounds, a nonprofit group promoting tourism that delivers education, entertainment and recreation while conserving the region's special natural, historic and cultural resources.
Information on local attractions and points of interest will be available.
``North Carolina residents can take pride in this beautiful facility,'' Basnight said. ``Not only does it benefit tourists, but it also benefits local residents.''
Picnic tables, grills, water fountains, public telephones and handicapped-accessible facilities are available. Travelers crossing the U.S. 64 bridge can get a scenic view of the Rest Area and Visitor's Center, which sits at the foot of the Scuppernong River bridge. by CNB
