SYMPHONY AND MUSICIANS GIVE TENTATIVE OK TO 2-YEAR PACT

The Virginia Symphony has reached a tentative two-year contract with its musicians, it was announced Monday.

``We're very pleased that an agreement has been reached,'' said Jennifer Sieracki, a spokeswoman for the symphony. ``We look forward to preparing for upcoming concerts and a terrific season.''

She said that details of the contract would be released later this month, after its expected ratification by Local 125 of the American Federation of Musicians and the symphony's board of directors.

Tom Reel, the musicians' spokesman, noted that ``the i's have to be dotted and the t's have to be crossed'' before the agreement is official. He credited the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service for helping break the impasse between the symphony and the union.

``I believe without the federal mediator, this would not have happened today,'' Reel said.

Contract negotiations began in the spring. Musicians had been playing under a ``play and talk'' agreement since late August. That agreement expired Sunday. by CNB
