Pier fishing along the Outer Banks was fairly good this weekend.
Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught plenty of spot, some nice croaker and several 2- to 3-pound bluefish Saturday afternoon. A few spot were taken on Avalon Pier.
Nags Head Pier reported scattered spot, croaker, small black drum and a few keeper puppy drum. A few spot, croaker and baby black drum were taken from Jennette's Pier and Outer Banks Pier sporadically throughout the day Saturday.
Plenty of puppy drum were decked by anglers on Rodanthe Pier Saturday morning. Some bluefish, spot and puppy drum were taken on Avon Pier.
Frisco Pier reported a few mullet and spot. An 11-pound black drum was taken on cut bait by Cheryl Kruger of Richmond.
Diminishing winds and calmer seas produced increasing action on piers along the northern beaches Sunday.
Lots of spot, some croaker and a few puppy drum were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier. Fishermen on Avalon Pier caught spot, 4- to 6-pound puppy drum, a few nice speckled trout, and croaker weighing as much as two pounds.
Nags Head Pier reported a good run of spot that started late Sunday morning and lasted the rest of the day. Some speckled trout and puppy drum weighing as much as 8 pounds also were taken.
Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier Sunday, with only a few croaker and spot landed. Some spot, croaker and lots of small black drum were caught from Outer Banks Pier.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported good catches of nice spot Sunday afternoon. Some tailor bluefish, speckled trout and 20 to 30 keeper puppy drum were taken on Avon Pier.
Spot were taken two at a time Sunday afternoon from Frisco Pier. Anglers also landed some pompano, speckled trout and 2-pound bluefish.
Pier fishing continued to be good along the Dare coast Monday, with mainly small bottom fish taken. A 34-pound drum was decked on Rodanthe Pier by Kyle Lovell of Rodanthe.
Surfcasters caught a few scattered bottom fish, bluefish and puppy drum along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet over the weekend. Action was best on Saturday, as Sunday's fishing was hampered by grass.
Bluefish and small bottom fish were taken from the north side of Oregon Inlet. Bluefish, puppy drum and some nice gray trout were landed by anglers fishing from the revetment on the inlet's south side.
Trout fishing was fair in the Green Island slough Saturday, with 2- to 3-pound speckled trout taken on finger mullet and Fin-S lures. Some keeper flounder also were landed.
Keeper puppy drum, spot, bluefish and scattered sea mullet were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton Saturday. Action slowed Sunday because of lots of grass.
Puppy drum fishing was good during the evenings and early in the mornings throughout the weekend at Cape Point. Tailor blues and small bottom fish also were taken.
Lots of bluefish and scattered keeper flounder were landed along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. Puppy drum were taken in good quantities from the sound in the Hatteras Inlet area.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was excellent Saturday. Plenty of bluefish and some small Spanish mackerel were taken. Action slowed Sunday.
Headboat fishing was slow around Oregon Inlet, with only a few small bluefish and sea bass landed.
No offshore trips were run to the Gulf Stream Saturday out of Oregon Inlet. A few charters fished the blue water Sunday, catching fair numbers of dolphin and a few tuna.
Good numbers of dolphin, a few wahoo and some bonito were taken by two charter craft fishing off Hatteras Sunday.
Bottom fishing should remain good on ocean piers as long as inshore water remains a little dirty.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72 degrees Monday. by CNB
