MAN CHARGED IN BEATING DEATH

A 22-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and charged with capital murder in the beating death of a 60-year-old man early Tuesday.

Police believe that the suspect, Rodney L. Sink of the 400 block of Summers Place, fatally beat Cecil E. Meeks at the victim's home on Wright Avenue sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

At 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to a boarding house where Meeks had rented a room for about four months. They found Meeks in his room, severely beaten.

Friends and neighbors said Sink had tried unsuccessfully to rent a room at the boarding house early Monday.

Howard Hobbs, a friend of Meeks, said Meeks was a retired pipefitter who worked for more than 30 years at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
