LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - ISLE OF WIGHT

Deny change of zoning

The request for a change of zoning from agricultural to industrial on Hunt Club Road will come before the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors in October of this year.

Isle of Wight's Comprehensive Land Plan is a good one and, though we believe the recommendation of the Planning Commission is the right decision, our board of supervisors will not have to accept that recommendation.

We, the people, work, raise our children, sleep and return to work. We barely have time left over for play. Mostly it's work, work, work for both partners in every marriage. We depend on you, our commissioners and board members, to make these plans work for the best interest of us all.

Even so, we as citizens should have an understanding of the things that may very drastically change the way we enjoy our daily lives. Suddenly, without warning, our communities can change from a place of quiet residences to noisy industrial sites. We must be alert to what is happening around us and get involved. The ideal is places for everything and everything in its place.

We know that industry helps in a big way to pay our bills, but don't let industry become our dictator, nor the money from it become our god.

We ask that this request be denied. Please stand by the plan. Thank you.

Carrsville Re-elect Sheriff Phelps

Like many of my fellow county residents, I want what is best for Isle of Wight County. I would like to endorse the re-election of Sheriff Charles Phelps.

For over a half century, this county has enjoyed law enforcement at its finest, and in that time we have had but four county sheriffs - Whitehead, Taylor, Dixon and Phelps. It is obviously a job that improves with time, and when we have consistent leadership we have a stable police operation. There is much to be said for a well-trained and well-led Sheriff's Department.

There is an old saying, ``If it's not broke, don't fix it.'' That surely applies in the case of county sheriff. I believe Charlie has done a commendable job of maintaining law and order. I think he is fair to everyone. He has some excellent people in the right places on his force. I have no bad feelings for the challengers, but they just do not have the depth of experience or the overwhelming job qualifications that Sheriff Phelps now possesses.

I hope all voters in the county will recognize the good police work performed by Sheriff Phelps and his deputies. After all, this is what matters - a good county Sheriff's Department. We have that, and we should keep it. Re-elect Sheriff Phelps!

Smithfield Elect Spivey sheriff

We need to bring Isle of Wight County together. Thank goodness we have a candidate like Shelton Spivey running for sheriff, who can balance our county's elected representation.

Why is it that Windsor has to pay $10,000 for deputy patrol but Smithfield has a sheriff's satellite office with no patrol functions? Smithfield has a police department; therefore the sheriff should be patrolling Windsor for free.

Shelton Spivey has the training, education and experience to spend our county funds wisely, fairly and efficiently. He is objective and willing to do what the people of Isle of Wight think is best for their county. Let's elect the best on Nov. 7: Shelton Spivey for sheriff.
