GREAT BRIDGE WINS ITS 6TH DISTRICT GOLF TITLE IN A ROW

Great Bridge breezed to its sixth consecutive Southeastern District golf tournament championship Tuesday at Seven Springs, but the Wildcats had to share some of the glory with two players on other teams.

Churchland's Jason McEwen captured medalist honors with rounds of 75 and 78 for a 10-over-par 153, leading the Truckers to a second-place finish. He had tied for the opening-round lead at Sleepy Hole Monday with teammate Robert Davis.

McEwen added 78 in the closing round over the par-71 Seven Springs course.

Norcom's Anthony Gregorie shot Tuesday's low round, a 4-over 75, and finished at 158. He was one of five individual qualifiers for the Eastern Region tournament from the non-qualifying teams.

Great Bridge's Bud Grissom was second overall with 154, followed by Deep Creek's Chris Huntzinger at 155.

Huntzinger electrified onlookers when he holed a 35-yard chip shot for an eagle on the 18th hole to give Deep Creek a tie with Western Branch for third place.

The Bruins and Hornets then played off for third - and the final qualifying spot for a team from the district to the Eastern Region tournament on Oct. 16-17.

The teams tied on the first playoff hole. When Western Branch moved five strokes up on the second hole with one group left to finish, Deep Creek coach Richard Cox conceded to the Bruins.

Great Bridge posted a team score of 644, carding 322 both rounds. Churchland had 331-336-667 andWestern Branch and Deep Creek each shot 676. The Bruins notched 342-334 and the Hornets had 339-337. Robey Baker led Western Branch at 85-81-166.

In addition to Gregorie, the other region qualifiers from non-qualifying teams were Huntzinger, Jeremy Carroll of Deep Creek (165), Chris Taylor of Indian River (165) and freshman Keith Vasconcellos of Indian River (174). by CNB
