Final approval was given Tuesday to the acquisition of three environmentally important parcels of land on the Outer Banks.
The Council of State approved the purchase these tracts:
A half-acre lot to be included in Jockey's Ridge State Park, for $39,000.
40 acres to be included in the Run Hill State Natural Area, for $497,777.
110 acres to be added to the Kitty Hawk Woods Nature Preserve, for $870,000.
``These land acquisitions by the state are important to preserve and enhance North Carolina's natural resources,'' said Senate Leader Mark Basnight of Manteo, who has been instrumental in the long campaign to get the sites. ``These properties will protect wildlife and plant life, allow for more study of wetlands, and improve the opportunity for citizens to explore North Carolina's natural habitat.''
The Council of State also authorized the purchase for $594,183 of 1,868 acres southeast of Edenton to provide long-term research and teaching opportunities, and the purchase for $700,000 of 620 acres near Williamston for the North Carolina Game Lands program. by CNB
