The Animal Assistance League is the only animal shelter in the Hampton Roads area that consistently enforces the mandatory spay/neuter policy for adoptions. This requires monthly court appearances, attorney fees and immeasurable time and effort on our part.
As president of the AAL, I am slightly offended that our shelter was not included in your recent article about the chow attack, despite approaching our 20th year of operation. Tidewater Humane also should have been named.
Tidewater Humane (623-SPAY) is the largest, most-effective spay/neuter-assistance program in the state. It has assisted more than 20,000 animal owners in the past nine years, providing a subsidized, low-cost alternative to expensive veterinary fees. The number of unwanted litters prevented by this service would fill kennels across the country.
Connie Wallaert, president of Tidewater Humane, and her staff volunteer more time and energy to this cause than all other programs combined. The slight you handed them is superficial reporting, at best.
