CAN YOU IMAGINE oceanfront property in Colorado? How about the West Coast becoming the Isles of California and the Mississippi River turning into an inland seaway?
These are visions that futurist Gordon-Michael Scallion believes will soon be realized as our planet experiences an extremely unstable period.
He foresees a shift of the Earth's axis, continent-altering earthquakes, changing weather patterns and a spiritual awakening.
``By 1997,'' Scallion said, ``if you were to take out your compass, you would find it pointing in a different direction. I think that the Earth's core has shifted its position, and that is what is going to change the magnetic field.''
Scallion brings his predictions to the Virginia Beach Pavilion on Saturday as part of a weekend conference, ``Prophecies for a New Millennium.'' Additional lectures are at the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach.
Some of Scallion's forecasts have come to pass, most notably the April 22, 1992, Los Angeles earthquake; the Jan. 17, 1994, Northridge, Calif., earthquake; Hurricane Andrew; the 1993 Mississippi floods; and the Jan. 17, 1995, quake in Kobe, Japan.
His prophecies are updated monthly in his newsletter, ``The Earth Changes Report.'' He is also author of the ``Future Map of the United States 1998-2001,'' which reveals his vision of what awaits this country - not much left of the West Coast or Florida, a great yawning sea running down the middle of the country and a very wet Hampton Roads.
Scallion, who has been featured on such television programs as the NBC special ``Ancient Prophecies'' and Fox's ``Sightings'' and ``Encounters,'' said his visions began in 1979, while he was hospitalized.
``It was like watching three television screens,'' Scallion said from his office in Chesterfield, N.H. ``It just terrified me. The whole room was full of color and all kinds of strange lights. Then the voice appeared just before the end of the 30 minutes and proceeded to say what was going to happen in my life.''
After a few years, Scallion decided to share the visions.
These visions can start at anytime, he said. ``They are totally at random, and I have no warning. They can last a few seconds to many minutes.''
Scallion said his ominous predictions are not supposed to cause panic but to help. More than 100,000 copies of his map, which he says should be considered an early-warning sign, have been sold.
``I'm not suggesting that everyone pack up the car and leave California,'' he said, ``but I am hoping that people will at least rethink their lives, what they are doing and why they are doing it.''
As Scallion sees it, Hampton Roads will fare better than most areas.
``Between now and 1998,'' Scallion said, ``I think what we are going to see is the Northeast becoming more temperate. Areas like Virginia will be much warmer. It just happens to be a place where I think the magnetic field, when it settles, will be favorable.
``The uniqueness about the area is that it rests geologically on what I would call a floating plateau. That same floating mini-plate that I see is also going to become a blessing. That whole section, which includes several states, including new land that will rise off your coast, will actually rise in elevation.''
Scallion doesn't claim that his predictions are perfect.
``Not all the things I have forecast have occurred,'' he said. ``Out of 100 forecasts, 15 to 17 of them do not happen on time, occurring either earlier or later, or they don't happen at all.''
