The North Landing Bridge, which spans the Intracoastal Waterway between Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, will be closed to cars for longer than expected.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials said Wednesday the bridge will reopen to automobile traffic at 6 p.m. Oct. 13. It was supposed to reopen this Friday.
The bridge, one of the main alternatives to interstates 64 and 44 for motorists traveling along Mount Pleasant and North Landing roads between the two cities, has been closed since Sept. 22 for repairs.
The bridge's mechanisms, which allow it to swing open for boats traveling the waterway, needed work.
William E. Brown, a spokesman for the Corps, said the delay was caused by bad weather and an unexpected discovery of structural problems.
Once traffic is restored, repairs will continue, which will require swinging the bridge open every half hour between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Construction is due to be complete by Oct. 30. by CNB
