Pier fishing in the northern beach area slowed Wednesday with the arrival of southerly winds.
Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught a lot of spot early in the day, but only scattered spot later on. A few nice speckled trout also were landed Wednesday.
A few speckled trout, pompano and spot were decked on Avalon Pier. Nags Head Pier reported a few mullet, bluefish and spot.
Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier during the morning, but quite a few big spot were taken from the end of the pier throughout the afternoon.
Spot fishing was good on Outer Banks Pier for a short time during the morning. A few puppy drum also were caught.
On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported a few bluefish, pompano and croaker landed during the morning, and a good run of spot after noon. Fishing was generally slow on Avon Pier.
Puppy drum were thick on Frisco Pier. About 40 drum weighing between 5 and 7 pounds were taken. Some nice sea mullet, 2-pound bluefish and pompano also were landed Wednesday.
Surf fishing along the northern beach area was slow overall, with only a few bottom fish taken. Action around Oregon Inlet also was fairly slow.
Puppy drum, small bluefish, sea mullet and some spot were beached by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Eight-to-twelve-pound puppy drum were plentiful on the south side of Cape Point. Some spot and bluefish were taken along the north beach.
Puppy drum fishing was excellent in the surf from Frisco to False Point.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow. Headboats in the area caught fair numbers of croaker.
Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet. Tuna fishing was slow, and only a handful of billfish were released. In Hatteras, sea conditions kept the boats at the dock.
Rough seas forecast for the next couple of days should produce some good puppy drum action.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 74 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
