John Joseph May, 87, of the 8500 block of Riverside Drive, a retired banker and civic leader, died Oct. 2, 1995.
Mr. May, a native of Richmond, retired from the then Bank of Virginia (Signet) in 1973 as a senior vice president. He was co-founder of the Richmond Corporation, where he served as vice president and treasurer until joining the bank in 1942.
Mr. May was past president and co-founder of the St. Johns Foundation, past fund chairman of the Red Cross and Richmond Area Community Chest, a member of the industrial Development Committee, Virginia State Chamber of Commerce and executive manager of the Virginia War Finance Committee. He served as director of the Virginia Council on Health and Medical Care and was a life member of the Municipal Finance Officers Association. He also served on the board of directors for the Retreat for the Sick Hospital and the advisory board for the Gills School. Mr. May was the 1943 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the American Institute of Banking and the Harvard Club of Virginia and he was a past member of the Commonwealth Club. He was an active member in St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Mr. May never received a formal education, but graduated with honors from the American Institute of Banking, attended night school at the University of Richmond and completed the Harvard Advanced Management Program.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Mahoney May; four sons, J. Joseph May Jr., and James Cherry May, both of Walkerton, Va., Dr. William Heath May of Suffolk, Va., Dr. Matthew James May of Richmond; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Remains rest at Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue, where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. today. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in Mt.
