LAWRENCE H. MANN

Lawrence ``Larry'' Howard Mann, 80, of the 600 block of Bethune Drive, died Oct. 3, 1995, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

He was a retired self-employed musician with the Larry Mann Trio. He was a native of Richmond, Va., and was a Presbyterian.

Mr. Mann started playing piano at age 6, advancing to composition and orchestration. By age 15, he was a member of the Musicians Union playing and arranging for the Henry Bryan Orchestra at a major hotel, while attending high school each day. He later joined the Hal Thurston Band touring the southern part of the country, then joined the Bert Lown Orchestra at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. He received offers from Benny Goodman and Raymond Scott at the time he went into the Army Air Force Band as a pianist and arranger touring Europe. Larry, along with French jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt, played concerts, recorded on Capitol, Decca and CBS Records, and broadcast in major European cities. Audiences often included royalty and heads of state. By invitation, he was piano soloist with the Paris Philharmonic Orchestra on the French Radio Network playing his own composition, ``Mon Amour.''

Larry has during his career played network radio, both in the U.S.A, and on the B.B.C. He has appeared with Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Roy Rogers, Mickey Rooney, Celeste Holme, Ingrid Bergman, Vaughn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, and others.

Most recently he completed a seven year engagement at the famous Williamsburg Inn as piano soloist, and with his trio.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Mann; daughter, Kimberly Kunkler of Bells Island, N.C.; son, Michael Mann of Virginia Beach; sisters, Jean McClure of Richmond and Mildred Barrett of Culpeper; brother, F. Wilber Mann of Goochland, Va.; and one grandchild, Stephan Kunkler.

A memorial will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Charles Hosay in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. Burial will be private and at a later date. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the residence, 624 Bethune Drive, Virginia Beach, and Saturday following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foodbank of Southeastern Va. or to St. Columba Ministries, c/o board of directors.
