KITTY HAWK ANGLERS LEAD TOURNAMENT AFTER 1 DAY

The Rising Tides fishing team, third-place finishers in the annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament a year ago, took an impressive lead in Thursday's opening session of the 1995 contest.

The team, based in Kitty Hawk, caught 16 fish Thursday morning, scoring 49 points. Although the Rising Tides drew a blank in the afternoon session, it was enough to give them a solid lead. Team members include Pat Preston, Harvey Kelly, Richard Harcum, Ted Moseley, Budd McLendon and Donnie Ross.

The She Devils of Nags Head, an all-female team, are second overall and the top women's squad going into today's second and final day for team competition. They had five fish and 27 points. The team consists of Doris Gard, Karen Theodorakis, Alice Burton, Jerry Isenhour, Dona Noyes and Tammie Lewis.

The Surfside Anglers of Elizabeth City are third overall with eight fish and 25 points. The team includes Rusty Jacobs, Jimmy Cartwright, Regis Dandar, Luther Jacobs, Ted McCreed and Newton Sharber.

Fish are scored by length.

While the Rising Tides won the first session, the McClammers Surf Fishing Team of Dunn, N.C., took the afternoon session with five fish and 10 points.

The largest-scoring fish have been a 24-inch puppy drum by Randy Howley of the Jersey Rod and Reelers of Moorestown, N.J., and a 23-inch puppy drum by Donna Noyes of the She Devils.

Hosted by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club, the contest runs through Saturday, with the final day featuring an individual contest, open to anyone. Some 80 six-person teams are competing in the team event, now in its 45th year.
