Dr. James Dugar Hathaway Jr., age 92, a resident of 3400 Springmoor Circle, died on Thursday, Oct. 5, 1995, in Springmoor Health Care Center.
A native of Elizabeth City, N.C., Dr. Hathaway had practiced optometry there for 60 years prior to his retirement in 1985 at the age of 83. He had resided in Raleigh, N.C., since 1992. Dr. Hathaway was born in Elizabeth City on Oct. 24, 1902. He was the son of the late Dr. James Dugar Hathaway and Iola Gibbs Hathaway. He attended the Rochester School of Optometry, Rochester, N.Y., and was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry, Philadelphia, Pa. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City, where he had served on the vestry. He was an avid gardener and a grower of prize-winning camellias.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Susan James Hathaway; daughter and son-in-law, Susan H. and Fred Bingham Gentry of Virginia Beach; a son, James D. Hathaway III of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Martha Elizabeth Hathaway of Wilmington, N.C., and Iola Hathaway Harrell of Elizabeth City; a niece, Mary Catherine Hathaway Arthur Smith of Wilmington; and two nephews, Herbert Hathaway Harrell of Chesapeake; and Haywood Stephen Harrell of Savannah, Tenn.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City, by the Rev. Josh McKenzie. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City, or the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB(NU)7295, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7295, or a favorite charity. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements.
