MELVIN S. DAVIS

Melvin Stevenson Davis, 73, of the 1300 block of Hanson Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1995, in his residence.

Mr. Davis, a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, was a native of Norfolk. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Arizona Higgs Davis. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Men's Club of the church. He was very active during the Model City program as a volunteer commissioner for the City of Norfolk. Mr. Davis was an Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Alice M. Davis of Norfolk; two sons, Dwight S. Davis of Norfolk, and Mallory D. Davis of Rhode Island; three sisters, Shirley McGlone, Arizona Johnson, and Hazel Johnson, all of Chesapeake; brother, John ``Tony'' Davis of New York; grandchildren, Steven V. Davis, Michael S. Davis and Justin D. Davis; daughters-in-law, Susanne Davis and Allison M. Davis; sisters-in-law, Nora M. Roach and Beatrice Davis; brother-in-law, William Johnson; four nieces and four nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rhonda Davis.

A funeral service will be conducted noon Monday by the Rev. Father Harold J. Cobb in Grace Episcopal Church, 1400 E. Brambleton Ave. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and at others times at 2616 Mapleton Ave. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
