WIND CHANGED DIRECTION BUT NOBODY TOLD THE FISH

A shift in the wind to a more westerly direction Friday didn't cause any improvement in pier fishing along the Outer Banks.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported a good run of spot during the morning, but the action was short-lived. By afternoon, fishing was slow.

A few spot, croaker and one puppy drum were taken on Avalon Pier. Small black drum, a few croaker and scattered spot were landed on Nags Head Pier.

A number of spot were caught by anglers on Jennette's Pier. Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier landed a few croaker, sea mullet and sand perch.

Rodanthe Pier reported slow fishing, with only a few croaker taken. A few black drum and small bluefish were decked on Avon Pier. Anglers on Frisco Pier caught small bluefish and baby flounder.

Surf fishing along the northern beaches also was slow Friday. Anglers caught a few mullet, croaker, black drum and an occasional puppy drum.

Fish were scarce around Oregon Inlet. A few blues were taken from the north side, and small bottom fish were landed by anglers fishing from the catwalk and the revetment.

Some sea mullet, a few croaker and a couple of puppy drum were beached in the surf from Rodanthe to Avon. Some puppy drum were landed during the morning at Cape Point.

A few puppy drum and flounder were taken along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet Friday. Action was good on the sound side of the inlet Thursday night, with puppy drum and keeper gray trout landed.

Inshore trolling was fair for small bluefish around Oregon Inlet Friday. Fair numbers of croaker were reported in the inlet area by the headboat Miss Oregon Inlet on a half-day trip.

Some scattered small king mackerel were landed in deeper water a few miles outside Oregon Inlet. Fair catches of tuna and dolphin were reported by Gulf Stream charters farther offshore.

Water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 75 degrees Friday. by CNB
