The Rising Tides fishing team of Nags Head held off a late challenge Friday to win the 45th annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament.
The team finished the two-day, four-session team competition with 18 fish and 56 points, the lowest winning score ever. Fish are scored by length.
The team scored 49 of its points in Thursday morning's opening session, when it boated 16 fish.
The Rising Tides include Pat Preston, Harvey Kelly, Richard Harcum, Ted Moseley, Budd McLendon and Donnie Ross.
The late challenge came from the Carolina Casters of Kill Devil Hills, who finished second with five fish and 34 points. They won Friday afternoon's final session with two fish and 14 points. The team featured Rob Blivens, Tony Garrett, Barry Greskevitch, Lee Sink, Mike Sullivan and Joe Vansickle.
The Surfside Anglers of Elizabeth City finished third with 10 fish and 33 points. The squad included Rusty Jacobs, Jimmy Cartwright, Regis Dandar, Luther Jacobs, Ted McCreedy and Newton Sharber.
The She Devils of Nags Head were the top female team, finishing fifth overall with five fish and 27 points. They had been second after Thursday's two sessions. The team featured Doris Gard, Karen Theodorakis, Alice Burton, Jerry Isenhour, Dona Noyes and Tammie Lewis.
Marie Parker of the Virginia Beach Sandwitches was top female angler with four scoring fish, while male honors went to Preston of the Riding Tides with seven scorers.
The largest fish caught by a female was a 24-inch puppy drum by Jonnie Corbett of the Frail Quails of Kitty Hawk. Ronald Howley of the Jersey Rod and Reelers of Moorestown, N.J., led male anglers, also with a 24-inch puppy drum.
Session winners included: 1. Rising Tides, 16 fish and 49 points; 2. The McClammers Surf Fishing Team, Dunn, N.C., 5 and 10; 3. Albemarle Anglers Club, Elizabeth City, 6 and 27; 4. Carolina Casters, 2 and 14.
While the 84 six-person teams completed their competition Friday, the contest continues with an individual session, open to anyone, today from 8 a.m. until noon, with categories for youth and adults.
The tournament is hosted by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club and is headquartered at the Soundside Pavilion.
