The city and the Fleet Combat Training Center at Dam Neck, both of whom are planning beach replenishment projects, have agreed tentatively to cooperate on future sand projects to save money.
Dam Neck is embarking on an $8.9 million project to rebuild a portion of the oceanfront base's beach this fall.
The city is working on a $93 million hurricane protection project for the resort strip and North End beaches, slated to begin next fall. It also has planned a $10 million beach nourishment project at Sandbridge to start in 1997.
While the timing of the initial projects do not mesh, officials are hopeful that future infusions of sand can be coordinated between the city and the Navy. Each of these beaches will require more sand over the years.
A large cost of beach replenishment is mobilizing the equipment to pump sand from offshore.
An agreement is now being drafted.
``The agreement says we shall work together and try to do simultaneous construction of replenishments with Dam Neck to gain the economies of scale,'' said Phillip J. Roehrs, city coastal engineer.
