LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - PORTSMOUTH

Too busy to visit

I do not like to plagiarize, but the following quote comes to mind: ``Good judgment comes from experience.''

Walter ``Square'' Edmonds' opponent, George Talbot, fails to meet this important need.

He's making door-to-door visits and asking, when was the last time Mr. Edmonds has been to your neighborhood? Well, when was the last time the sheriff, commissioner of revenue, treasurer and the commonwealth's attorney have appeared at your home? They have not, for they are tending the business of the city and of the commonwealth.

Door-to-door visitation has always been a ploy or maneuver for a candidate seeking office. I'm sure that Mr. Talbot did the same thing when he ran for two other offices, previously. Without success, I might add.

Mr. Edmonds' record has been an altogether good one. I believe that he ought to have the opportunity to serve another term for this city.

Oct. 2, 1995 Challenge is in order

In regard to the issue concerning the School Board's ``parental responsibility contract,'' I find it disgusting to know that we have politicians who think the citizens of Virginia are so ignorant as to let this occur and not challenge it.

As a citizen of the United States and Virginia, I have always been taught that any contract, oral or written, is invalid when one party is forced to sign his or her name under the threat of a fine or physical or mental harm.

Now is the time for the citizens to come together and file a suit such as the couple in Roanoke has done. We must also let these elected politicians know that election time will come again and we must vote them out.

Sept. 26, 2995 `Trained' before the job

We appreciate Mr. Jones' recent praise of our daughter's handling of his mother's estate at the Portsmouth Circuit Court.

However, the Clerk of Court, Walter Edmonds, did not ``train'' her to be courteous and compassionate. She had those qualities long before she went into public service, and I'm sure she will retain them with whomever is holding the office.

Sept. 27, 1995 Sounds like small child

I am writing in response to the letter written by Caroline Barnes. Mrs. Barnes sounds like a small child who had a party and no one came. I have been to several of the Democrats' functions and the Republicans all parked out front, counting people and cars.

I feel that it's great the government and city employees donate their time to help the party of their choice. Would Mrs. Barnes say the same thing if they were at her function? I think not.

The Republicans also sent a teenager to pass out literature at our last civic meeting. I suggest that Mrs. Barnes quit crying, ``Oh, me,'' and try to get to the issues at hand.

Mrs. Barnes should control her feelings of frustration. The majority of city employees don't support her candidates.

Oct. 4, 1995 He's for Andrews, Evans

As president of the fastest growing Republican Club in Portsmouth and Chesapeake, I would like to be the first in line of elected officials to endorse our Portsmouth and Chesapeake Republican legislative candidates.

In 1994, we saw a new vision for a new Republican majority in Washington. Now is the time for a new vision for Richmond. This is why we need new leaders like Frank E. ``Dutch'' Andrews Jr. and Dan Evans.

``Dutch'' is someone I have known for a long time. He is a man who is honest and dedicated to the majority. Surely the best will happen for Portsmouth and Chesapeake. He will fight for our families and positive growth. He is long needed to replace Kenneth R. Melvin. Did the voters realize, among other things, that Melvin voted against minimum sentences for second-time rapists and murderers? I personally don't think murderers need a second chance.

Dan Evans is also someone who needs your support. Dan will bring a needed business understanding to our government. Virginia is moving into the 21st century and it is time to have leaders from a broad spectrum. Dan, like ``Dutch,'' will vote to protect our families. He will vote for more parental involvement in our children's lives. Did the voters realize that Billy Moore has voted against parental notification? How can any reasonable person permit a 14-year-old to have an abortion without a parent's permission? It's time to replace Billy Moore!

I hope the voters this November will vote for a new team. It's time for Dan Evans and Frank E. ``Dutch'' Andrews for House of Delegates.
