As members of the Lake Edward area and Wesleyan Forrest civic leagues and the Lake Edward Area Neighborhood Advisory Council, we were saddened, angered and indeed horrified to learn of the recent desecration of the beautiful new home of congregation Beth Chaverim under construction just a few miles from our neighborhood. We sincerely hope that all who participated in these hate crimes have been identified quickly and begin making restitution. The juveniles charged in this incident, and their parents, should also be required to acquaint themselves with the traditions and values of Judaism and the history of bigotry and hate groups.
We urge other civic groups and churches who are horrified by these crimes against the Jewish faith community and against us all to express their horror publicly. Let it be known that the unspeakable evils that are anti-Semitism, hate and bigotry have no place in Virginia Beach or anyplace else at the end of the 20th century.
