The Southeastern District girls tennis tournament starts a four-day run Tuesday.
Opening matches Tuesday will be at 3 p.m. in singles.
The tournament will be held at Churchland and Western Branch.
Indian River's No. 1 player, Helena Carvalho, was undefeated in league play and looms as the individual standout. Another solid contender will be Great Bridge's No. 1 player, Kim Burnop, who lost to Carvalho, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, in their league match.
For the past three years Great Bridge teammates Sara Guthrie and Carey Stafford played for the crown. Stafford won in 1992 and Guthrie won the past two years.
The same two won the district doubles title in 1993 and 1994.
Doubles play will start Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Play will begin Wednesday and Thursday at 9 a.m.
The singles final will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The doubles final will be at 2 p.m.
No team berths in the regional are at stake. Champion Great Bridge and runner-up Indian River qualified as the 1-2 finishers in regular-season play.
