GENERAL ASSEMBLY CANDIDATES TO SPEAK AT 2-PART BEACH FORUM

A two-part public forum with General Assembly candidates running in Virginia Beach will be held Wednesday and Thursday nights in City Council chambers at the Municipal Center, Building 1.

The forum, at 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. each night, is being co-sponsored by the Virginia Beach division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Beach Council of Civic Organizations and the League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads.

Candidates at the Wednesday night program will be:

Senate, 7th District, Sen. Clarence Holland, Democratic incumbent, and Edward Schrock, Republican challenger.

House, 83rd District, Del. Leo C. Wardrup, Republican incumbent, and Philip Geib, Democratic challenger.

House, 87th District, Del. Howard E. Copeland, Democratic incumbent, and Thelma S. Drake, Republican challenger.

And uncontested incumbents, Del. Bob Purkey, R-82nd District; Del. Robert Tata, R-85th; and Del. William P. Robinson Jr., D-90th.

Candidates at the Thursday night program will be:

Senate, 6th District, Sen. Stanley C. Walker, Democratic incumbent, and Dimitrios Rerras, Republican challenger.

Senate, 14th District, Sen. Mark L. Earley, Republican incumbent, and Mark W. Walker, Independent challenger.

House, 21st District, Del. Frank W. Wagner, Republican incumbent, and Robert Avery, Democratic challenger.

Uncontested incumbents: Sen. Kenneth W. Stolle, R-8th; Del. Glenn R. Croshaw, D-81st; and Del. Robert F. McDonnell, R-84th.

The sponsoring organizations already have collected and culled questions to submit to the candidates. None will be taken from the floor.

The questions will concern eight categories: education, transportation, campaign-finance reform, environment, taxes and spending, social and health policies, economic development and justice.

The format also includes opening and closing statements from each candidate.

The forum will be videotaped for re-broadcast later this month on the municipal television station, VBTV, Cox Cable channel 48.
