Police are investigating the possible neglect of a baby born early Sunday in a campground near the Oceanfront.
The 8-pound, 8-ounce boy was discovered by his grandmother, lying on a plastic sheet in a sink in a trailer at the Holiday Trav-L Park on General Booth Boulevard, police said. The woman, who had been unaware of her daughter's pregnancy, called 911 for medical assistance.
Police are not releasing the name of the mother, a 23-year-old from Homestead, Fla., who was visiting the area with her parents.
The newborn, suffering from hypothermia and other medical problems, was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital shortly after 1 a.m., police said. He was listed in stable and improving condition in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit Sunday night.
Apparently full-term, the baby is expected to remain hospitalized for seven to 14 days.
The mother also was admitted for observation but is expected to be released today.
Police said they were drawn into the case by rescue workers because of the baby's condition.
The department's Family Trauma Unit will discuss its findings with the Virginia Beach commonwealth's attorney's office today to determine if criminal charges should be filed.
