KOLB EXTENDS TOURNEY LEAD; 3 ANGLERS DOUBLE THE FUN

Jimmy Kolb and Gary Johns of Virginia Beach and Thomas W. Peters and Jimmy Bizzell of Chesapeake are anglers to be envied.

Kolb has earned a citation from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament in his 10th category. It was a 9-pound, 2-ounce gray trout, caught at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Kolb now has a two-fish lead in the chase to become angler of the year in the tournament. His nearest competitor is Mark Campbell of Virginia Beach, who has entries in eight classes.

Johns, meanwhile, earned citation awards in two categories. Fishing at the bridge-tunnel, he scored with a 6-1 flounder and a black drum which he released.

Peters had a different double. He had two citation-winning speckled trout, at 9-8 and 5-9. Both were caught at the Hot Ditch near Virginia Power's Chesapeake Power Plant, off the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River.

Bizzell also had a double while fishing at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk. His catches, both citations in the Virginia Fresh Water Fishing Program, were a 13-inch yellow perch and a 1-pound shellcracker.

Elsewhere, big red drum made a good showing at Cape Point on Hatteras and in the surf of the Eastern Shore Barrier Islands. And anglers with skipper Steve Gwaltney boated 15 big yellowfin tuna on the charter boat Sea Jay IV out of Pirate's Cove Marina at Nags Head on Sunday.
