WFOS FM-88.7, the radio station of the Chesapeake public schools, was dead yesterday and will remain so for part of today.
If listeners were looking for classical music, swing and oldies along with news, weather and public service programs and announcements, all they heard and will hear is dead air.
The station's chief engineer, David Desler, said WFOS will be back on the air by midday today.
According to Desler, ``there was a malfunction on the voltage controller in the high power portion of the transmitter.''
In short, the station's rheostat died, causing it to go off the air.
The Monday morning announcer couldn't get the station up and running at its sign-on time at 6 a.m. yesterday. Desler was called in, checked the situation and found it needed the new rheostat.
The station had to make an emergency order from the Harris Allied company in Quincy, Ill.
The part is due to arrive via FedEx early today.
``As soon as I get it in, I can get the station back on the air in about an hour,'' Desler said. ``Just keep trying us on Tuesday (today), we'll soon be back on.''
