FISHING IS SPOTTY SUNDAY, IMPROVING MONDAY

Pier fishing along the Dare coast was unusually slow throughout the weekend, although a long-awaited wind shift to the northeast Sunday morning produced a marginal increase in pier action.

Kitty Hawk Pier fishermen caught some spot and a few croaker Saturday and Sunday.

A few sea mullet, croaker and small black drum were taken on Avalon Pier Saturday. Continued slow fishing was reported Sunday.

Nags Head Pier reported several spot, bluefish, very small croaker and one gray trout Saturday. A good run of small spot and some croaker were taken late in the day Sunday.

Anglers on Jennette's Pier landed a a few sand perch Saturday. A few spot and sea mullet were reported Sunday.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught small black drum Saturday and Sunday. A run of small spot developed Sunday afternoon but was short-lived.

Rodanthe Pier reported only a few sea mullet and small puppy drum Saturday. Avon Pier anglers caught a few sea mullet and small black drum. Fishing was slow Saturday morning on Frisco Pier, but quite a few nice croaker were taken during the afternoon.

Rodanthe Pier, Avon Pier and Frisco Pier all reported scattered catches of bottom fish Sunday.

Pier action improved along the Outer Banks Monday. Good numbers of spot and croaker were taken on northern beach piers. Hatteras Island pier anglers caught bottom fish and puppy drum.

Surf fishermen along the northern beaches caught a few bottom fish, bluefish and puppy drum during the weekend. Some puppy drum and tailor bluefish also were taken around Oregon Inlet.

Several good catches of puppy drum were reported by anglers fishing near ``the boiler,'' south of Oregon Inlet. Quite a few small sea mullet, some bluefish and scattered puppy drum were beached by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Drum fishing was good Saturday evening at Cape Point, with 20 to 25 fish taken, weighing as much as 41 pounds. Some nice-sized speckled trout were landed along with the drum.

Small black drum, pompano and flounder weighing as much as 5 pounds, 10 ounces were taken from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow during the weekend. Some king mackerel and barracuda were taken by intermediate charters off Oregon Inlet Saturday.

Fair numbers of yellowfin tuna and scattered wahoo were caught by offshore fishermen east of Oregon Inlet on Saturday. Offshore action slowed Sunday, with scattered tuna and a few wahoo taken.

Small dolphin were plentiful in the Gulf Stream off Hatteras. Wahoo fishing also was pretty good over the weekend. Several sailfish and one blue marlin were released by charters over the weekend.

Spot fishing should remain good on the northern beach piers, if winds continue to blow from the northeast.

The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72 degrees Monday. by CNB
