The Norfolk State University Marching Spartans put on a dazzling display Saturday night as the featured performers in the Kempsville Classic band competition. The NSU band had most of the Center for Effective Learning stadium crowd on its feet during the performance.
The band competition featured five high schools in addition to the host Marching Chiefs. New Brunswick (Ohio) High, a division five school, won the Grand Champion award for the evening, while Monacan edged Churchland among division one schools, and Ocean Lakes beat back Bayside in the division two category.
Kempsville High followed with an exhibition performance of its own before the NSU troupe took the field. The Spartans electrified the crowd, who had weathered intermittent rain and a later start for the event, which was moved back several hours to accommodate the university band.
