220TH BIRTHDAY BASH: The city of Norfolk and the Navy are sponsoring a celebration of the Navy's 220th birthday on Friday at Nauticus. The event is free and open to the public. The birthday party, which begins at 12:30 p.m., includes music by the Atlantic Fleet Band and His Majesty the King's Guard of Norway. Navy ships berthed at the Nauticus International Pier are open for tours, and the submarine Boise will stage a ``sail-by.'' In addtion, a naval aircraft flyover and a SEALS demonstration are scheduled. Town Point Park, adjacent to Nauticus, opens to the public at 5 p.m. for a free concert. National country recording artist Kathy Mattea is the featured performer. A fireworks display concludes the celebration at 9 p.m.
NAVY'S NEWEST SHIP: The dock landing ship Carter Hall, commissioned Sept. 30, arrives at its new home at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Friday, docking at the Quay Wall East pier. Commanded by Cmdr. Rand D. LeBouvier, it has a crew of 22 officers and 397 enlisted, with an annual income of more than $11.4 million. The second vessel to bear such a name, Carter Hall is the name of a Virginia estate owned by Col. Nathaniel Burwell of Carter's Grove, near Williamsburg. He built his country mansion on 8,000 acres in the lower Shenandoah Valley. It was used by both the Confederate and Union Forces during the Civil War and still stands today.
DRY BIRTHDAY FOR IKE: The carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, christened 20 years ago today, is spending the beginning of its second decade high and dry at Newport News Shipbuilding's Dry Dock 11. It began its day at 4 a.m., by moving into the drydock for the start of a yearlong overhaul designed to keep the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier working for perhaps another 20 years.
PLANK OWNERS WANTED: The 27-year-old Norfolk-based destroyer tender Puget Sound is seeking plank owners - original crew members - who wish to attend its decommissioning Jan. 27. BOAT BECOMES RESEARCH VESSEL: The former Swift Boat PCF-2 will be recommissioned the Research Vessel Matthew Maury in ceremonies at 10 a.m. Saturday at the South Basin Pier adjacent to Nauticus in Town Point Park, Norfolk. Tidewater Community College will use it for coastal research. The ceremony will include the official changing of the crews and flags. The public is invited.
``SLUGS'' ACCIDENT FREE 10 YEARS: The ``Fighting Escargots,'' or Slugs as they are affectionately known, have passed a 10-year milestone of accident-free flying. The Norfolk-based E-2C Hawkeye radar squadron, formally known as Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 78, is a reserve squadron in its 25th year of service. It has flown more than 16,000 hours in the past 10 years without a significant mishap.
SALUTE TO DISABLED WORKERS: Sgt. 1st Class Dana Bowman, an aerial demonstration parachutist with the Army's Golden Knights parachute team, will be guest speaker at 2 p.m. Friday at Fort Monroe's Post Theater for a program observing National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Bowman, who is the first double amputee to re-enlist in the Army, suffered his injuries in a mid-air collision with a teammate Feb. 6, 1994. His talk, entitled ``What I can do, you can do,'' is free and open to the public.
