WARNER'S RHETORIC

I used to think that John Warner, Republican senator from Virginia, was a decent guy. That was until I heard his new campaign ad on the radio.

His ad campaign is reminiscent of Adolf Hitler's practice of molding public opinion by the ``big lie.'' In what has to be a deliberate untruth, John Warner falsely compares the sizes of the military and ``welfare'' budgets and proclaims that the problem lies solely with Democratic extravagance.

With the diminishing prospects of a third party offering a meaningful alternative to the two established parties, a little more of John Warner's intemperate rhetoric may send this ex-Democrat (and, I suspect, many more) back to the fold.
