OBERNDORF TO LEAD STATE MUNICIPAL LEAGUE HER STATEWIDE ROLE WILL BE TO LOBBY, INFORM.

Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf was named president of the Virginia Municipal League Tuesday.

The league, a nonpartisan organization of public officials from all of Virginia's 40 cities, 156 towns and 15 counties, held its annual meeting Sunday through Tuesday at the Pavilion in Virginia Beach.

``It's an honor for me to serve as president of the Virginia Municipal League,'' Oberndorf said in a statement.

``It's also a great opportunity for me to spread the good news about Virginia Beach to my colleagues across Virginia.''

Oberndorf has been a member of the league since she took a class on how to be a good council member when she first won elected office in 1976.

``I am what they call an overnight success. It only took me 20 years (to make president),'' Oberndorf said.

She has served as chairwoman of the league's environmental quality committee, urban committee, legislative committee and board of directors.

As president for the next year, Oberndorf said she will lobby the state and federal government and keep local officials informed about issues affecting their communities.

It will be a busy year, Oberndorf said, with the state and federal governments promising severe funding cutbacks.

Citizens will look to the local government instead to provide services formerly funded in Richmond or Washington, D.C., she said.

``We're where the rubber hits the road,'' she said. by CNB
