PIERS WERE THE PLACE TO BE FOR GOOD SPOT FISHING

Spot fishing was excellent on most piers along the northern beaches Tuesday.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught plenty of spot. A few croaker weighing as much as 2 pounds also were landed. Some speckled trout were taken from the end of the pier.

Spot were plentiful on Avalon Pier. Some gray trout, speckled trout and a few puppy drum also were landed.

Spot, tailor bluefish, small puppy drum and scattered speckled trout were caught from Nags Head Pier. Jim Powell of Kill Devil Hills landed a pompano weighing 2 pounds, 15 ounces, during the morning.

Jennette's Pier reported pretty good spot and mullet action during the afternoon.

Spot were taken off and on during the day on Outer Banks Pier, along with some gray trout and sea mullet.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported puppy drum, spot and bluefish. A few sea mullet and some nice croaker were taken Tuesday on Avon Pier. Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier, with only a few small bottom fish taken.

Although seas were fairly rough from Corolla to Oregon Inlet, some puppy drum and small bottom fish were taken by surf fishermen.

Some nice-sized gray trout were landed by anglers fishing from the south side of Oregon Inlet near the ferry dock. Scattered puppy drum, bottom fish and keeper flounder were caught from the catwalk and the revetment.

Pompano weighing as much as 2 1/2 pounds were landed from Rodanthe to Buxton, along with some sea mullet.

Quite a few puppy drum were caught along the beach between ramps 23 and 30. A 36-pound channel bass was beached at ramp 30.

Fair numbers of puppy drum were taken at Cape Point Monday night and again Tuesday morning. Sea mullet, bluefish and some puppy drum were landed along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet improved Tuesday, with fairly good catches of small bluefish and a few Spanish mackerel reported.

Headboats in the Oregon Inlet area reported sea bass, pigfish and a few gray trout decked.

A few dolphin and fair numbers of yellowfin tuna were taken by charters off Oregon Inlet Tuesday. Good catches of wahoo and small dolphin were reported by the Hatteras offshore fleet.

Speckled trout fishing should improve along the beach if seas fall, allowing the water to clear inshore.

The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
