It wasn't until the 18th tee that Kevin Miller realized he and close friend Chad Wilson were tied for the lead in the Beach District golf tournament final Wednesday at Bow Creek.
That put a little edge on the eight-foot birdie putt Miller faced the the victory.
But the Salem sophomore showed nerves of steal as he drilled the shot for the district title, edging his Ocean Lakes buddy by a stroke.
Cox took the team title for the seventh straight year with a 15-stroke advantage over Kempsville.
``Me and Chad had been talking the whole time, trying to take the pressure off each other,'' Miller said. ``When we got to the 18th, I asked some teammates how (First Colonial's Brian) Horan and (Kempsville's Steve) Savage were doing. ``That's when I realized me and Chad were tied for the lead.''
Miller entered the final round with a two-stroke lead after shooting a personal-best 66 Tuesday at Kempsville Greens. Miller shot a 75 Wednesday at Bow Creek, while Wilson had a 73.
After trading bogeys on 14 and 15, Miller and Wilson found themselves in a tie after Wilson bogeyed the tough par-four 16 and Miller double-bogeyed.
They parred 17, setting up the dramatic finish on the 18th green.
